Rivendell Roaduno Singlespeed Frame

This is for the frame only. We will not be getting completes but are happy to build you a custom bike, get in touch!

It's the most useful, and fun non-derailer'd bicycle (or frame) we can imagine (along with the Bassi Bloomfield of course). It's named Roaduno to emphasize that it's for roads. Smoothish paths, no problem if you have the skills for them--like the Homer in that way. The sidepull brakes should tell you it's not a mountain bike.

It's as versatile and as customizable as a single-ish speed road bike can be:

• Fits tires to 46mm (43mm with a fender). Any tire bigger than 40mm requires some deflation to install and remove, but that was no reason to not design in clearance for bigger tires. Braze-ons for racks (and fenders), and of course has a kickstand plate.
• Rear facing dropouts, for normal 1x1 single speed set-ups, but with an integrated derailer hanger, so you can use chain tensioner and a front derailer to set it up as a 2x or even 3x1. Or use a chain tensioner and leave the front derailer off and just shift by hand when you get to the hill.
• There's a downtube shifter braze-on on the non-driveside downtube, for easy front derailer set ups. If you plan to set it up as a 1x1 singler, we recommend covering the boss with a boss cover. Grease it, otherwise it'll be hard to get off after a couple years.
• Sizes: 47.5, 51 (650B), and 54.5, 58, 61.5, 64 (<--all 700C).

Frame & fork: Rivendell's standard super-quality, butted CrMo tubing of their own design. Their lugs, fork crown, dropouts. Same painter as always, same lug-fill cream details, nice metal head badge, excellent graphics, etc. The fork crown is the same one used on the Appaloosa.

Fits tires: 42mm with fender, 46mm without.

Brakes: Long Reach Calipers. Use Tektro R559's / R369s, Paul Racer Long Reach, or Yokozuna LR75's

Rear hub spacing: 120mm. You need a track hub or a pre-1975 road hub.

Bottom Bracket: BSA, 68mm shell.

Seatpost size: 26.8, and there's one included

FAQs

• What's included in the frame price? An FSA Duron headset, a Kalloy seatpost, and a 110mm Shimano BB.
• Any frame prep required? Yes, if you plan to use a tensioner the hanger needs to be aligned. Any bike shop can do it quickly, or, if you have the tool, it takes about five minutes.
• Is the Shimano 110 BB installed? If NOT does the BB shell need to be prepped/faced? It's installed. Don't face the shell unless you're using a BB with a lip that sits on it, like a Tange cup-n-cone. The threads are perfect and don't need to be chased either. The only frame prep required is that the hanger needs to be aligned if you plan on using a tensioner.
• Do the larger sizes have a double top tube? No, everything is single now. RBW are moving away from doubles.
• Wait, what is this thing? A single speed with a derailler hanger? Yes, exactly. The Roaduno can be set up as a regular 120mm singlespeed by pulling the wheel back in the track-out, or you can use a chain tensioner and set it up with a double or triple in front.
  Having just one or two more gears doesn't detract much from the fun spartan minimalism of a single speed, but makes it a bike you can ride basically everywhere without giving yourself a hernia. You'll be surprised at how much you can do with even just two gears. It'll definitely put 12 and 13 speed cassettes into perspective.
  This is a bike that lends itself to interesting set-ups and experimentation. I bet at least one maniac out there uses a 5 speed Regina freewheel on it.
• If I set it up as a 2x1, how much of a spread can I have? A Paul Melvin will wrap 20t worth of chain, and any old derailer will do that and more. If you want a spread that big, I recommend a 3x1. If you want just two gears, a 10 to 12 tooth difference between chainrings works best.
