FAQ

Don't you get these boxes for free? Why should I have to pay for one?

When a bike shop buys a bicycle from a big brand, it does indeed come mostly disassembled in the smallest possible box for shipping, and bike shops tend to keep those boxes for a certain time or just recycle them. When we have those boxes available we actually do give them away for free on request!

However, we build in-house the vast majority of the bikes we sell, so we don't usually have used boxes floating around. Since we're a bike manufacturer we have our own boxes custom-manufactured here in Montréal, and they're neither free nor even particularly cheap: the cardboard is double-layer corrugated and as thick as we could reasonably get it, the boxes are quite large and not simple to transport or store, and therefore we have to charge for them.

Basically, since we're invested in making sure our custom-made bicycles arrive in perfect shape to the person who bought one new, and because we want them to have an easy time putting it together and taking it for a ride, we make a really good box that's airline-maximum size so that the bicycle doesn't need a lot of reassembly. This makes it kind of perfect for touring bikes, which is our main kind of bike.

How big is this box? Will it fit within an airline's baggage standards?

The box is designed to be the largest Air Canada will accept. Many airlines have very reasonable flat rate fees for boxed bicycles. If they don't, it'll be treated as oversized baggage anyway. If you decide to pack other things into the box, please note the American TSA doesn't like that, they think the only contents of the box should be a bicycle.

It's big enough that many touring bikes won't need to have both luggage racks removed, and even if it winds up being necessary they'll be easy to pack in with the bicycle.

We have never encountered a size issue with this box when someone's flying with it in the decade or so we've been making it.

How should I cart this gigantic box around? Can I carry it on a bike?

Folded gently in half, the box remains perfectly usable and sturdy and can fit in most cars. Folded equally carefully in thirds, it's slightly awkward but eminently possible to carry on a bicycle as long as it's got a platform rack you can strap the box to. You'll have a wide load so ride carefully but many of us have biked to/from airports that way!
